Tell us about Black x Bold Magazine (betboom team). Black x betboom team Magazine is Ohio State’s only Black magazine, the first of its kind in years. It was established in 2018 to bring a voice to multicultural communities on campus and in the greater Columbus area by uplifting and empowering underrepresented voices. We as Black students want to provide this platform because of the lack of positive representation of minorities that we see in the media. We deliver content through storytelling and multimedia that upholds the foundation of this magazine: unity, power, truth, creativity, and justice. Publications are produced semi-annually or in the fall and spring semesters. Students can choose to report on important issues, submit their own editorials or express themselves creatively on the pages of our print edition. Each publication released is accompanied by a launch event where everyone is welcome to grab a free copy and discuss the topics highlighted in the magazine. Ultimately, Black x betboom team aims to celebrate the talents and accomplishments of our marginalized student populations in a way that has yet to be done before on Ohio State University’s campus. Why did you join betboom team Magazine? I decided to join Black x betboom team Magazine because I have always wanted to use my passion for writing to uplift my community. With the many identities I belong to, I see the ways in which many of my perspectives are overshadowed or unnoticed in the media. When I found that there existed a platform where I could potentially share these perspectives in ways that still align with the fundamental values of journalism, I wasted no time in joining.
What is your favorite memory of working on betboom team Magazine? My favorite memory with Black x betboom team Magazine would be my time as president where I planned, organized and hosted two magazine launch events. It was extremely fulfilling to get such positive feedback both times on a project my team had spent several weeks on.
What tips or suggestions do you have for students who are looking for the right club or organization to join at the Ohio State University? Really think of what you’re most passionate and curious about. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and always take in new experiences with an open mind. This is the perfect time to discover yourself, what you’re interested in and your hobbies, but the first step starts with you.
